Prepare God’s People

May 6th, 2012

A few years ago, when Ursula and I were in London, we came across the Sainsbury’s Support Centre. I found the title interesting and fascinating. What was a support Centre?

Resurrection Power Now

April 29th, 2012

Jesus is alive! He is the living one! He has flesh and bones. Jesus has defeated death. He has triumphed over the grave. ‘Death has been swallowed up in victory.” And you and I share in Jesus’ resurrection. And not just in the future, but in the here and now.

Stop and think about that! You and I share in Jesus’ resurrection. And not just in the future, but in the here and now.

Flesh and Bones

April 22nd, 2012

This is Easter.  Jesus is alive! He is the living one! He has a body – He has flesh and bones. Jesus has defeated death. He has triumphed over the grave. ‘Death has been swallowed up in victory.” And you and I share in Jesus’ resurrection.
You have a body and you will be given a new body.
Luke records . . .  They were startled and frightened,  thinking they saw a ghost.  He said to them,  “Why are you troubled,  and why do doubts rise in your minds?  Look at my hands and my feet.  It is I myself!  Touch me and see;  a ghost does not have flesh and bones,  as you see I have.” When he had said this,  he showed them his hands and feet.  And while they still did not believe it  because of joy and amazement,  he asked them, “ Do you have anything here to eat?”  They gave him a piece of broiled fish,  and he took it and ate it in their presence.

Have we become too familiar with this amazing news? The disciples are startled and frightened. They are troubled, doubts rise in their minds. Then they are overcome with joy and amazement.

Remember Jesus Christ

April 8th, 2012

Remember Jesus Christ, Raised From The Dead. In giving this command to Timothy Paul was not doubting Timothy’s powers of memory; rather he was driving home a vital and necessary truth. What Paul meant by these particular words was this .. ‘Always keep Jesus Christ at the centre  and forefront of all your thinking.’

This is a truth that relates to everyday living – day in, day out.
As you go to work ..
As you do your housework ..
As you relax at home, alone or with family ..
As you socialise with friends and neighbours ..
Remember Jesus Christ, Raised From The Dead

March 13th, 2012

Do you ever feel that your belief in God is under attack?  Do you ever wonder if you have got it all wrong?  Perhaps there is no God.
And that’s where this mornings reading comes in . . .  There are all kinds of interesting facts bout the Transfiguration, but what is its significance for us living in the Twenty-First century?

I Can Resist Anything, But ….

February 26th, 2012

Who said it? Was it Charlie? Or was it Trevor? The answer is, it was neither Charlie or Trevor. Although they may have uttered the words … The saying is attributed to Oscar Wilde.
And the saying is?  “I can resist everything except temptation”

Last Sunday afternoon, the BBC Songs of Praise featured three people who had given into temptation,  but who had subsequently turned away from it.  The first was seduced by fame. The second was drawn away by adultery. The third was trapped by substance abuse.

Why are we considering the subject of temptation today? One good reason is the fact that we all face temptation. We may not all face the same temptations . . . but we are all tempted. Another good reason is that Jesus himself faced temptation. He too faced temptation, but he never gave into it. He overcame and we can enter into his victory.

Church Membership

February 16th, 2012

Did you know that Church Membership is not mentioned in the Bible? But then neither is brushing your teeth or eating your five a day. Indeed there are many matters the Bible says nothing about. Have you ever wondered why this is so?

To answer this, you have to ask yourself another question, “What’s the primary purpose of the Biblical revelation?” In other words, “What’s it all about it?”

The Bible is not about history or geography or astronomy or science. The Bible is not about health issues or healthy eating. The Bible is not about church government. It is not even about church services.

That’s not to say that the Bible doesn’t mention ‘church’. The Bible does speak about church … Jesus said, ” I will build my church.” Paul wrote, to the church of the Thessalonians. The same word ‘church’ is used by both Jesus and Paul. Yet although the meaning is the same, there is a difference.
